HEADLINES
What You Need To Know

President Trump ramped up pressure on Fed Chair Jerome Powell Thursday, calling for immediate rate cuts and hinting at his removal. In a Truth Social post, Trump slammed Powell as “Too Late Jerome” and said his “termination cannot come fast enough.” The post follows Powell’s comments that Trump’s tariffs complicate monetary policy decisions. While a White House official said Trump’s remarks weren’t a formal threat, the president later told reporters, “If I want him out, he’ll be out of there real fast.” Powell’s term runs through May 2026, and legal experts say the president cannot fire him.

UnitedHealth slashed its 2025 profit forecast, citing soaring medical costs in its Medicare Advantage plans. The surprise guidance cut sent shares plunging 19% and wiped out over $130 billion in value across the health insurance sector. The company now expects earnings of $26 to $26.50 per share, well below Wall Street’s $29.73 estimate. CEO Andrew Witty said UnitedHealth is taking aggressive action to address the challenges. The news also pressured rivals like CVS, Cigna, and Humana, though hospital stocks rose on expectations of stronger patient demand.

Consumer spending jumped in March, with retail sales rising 1.4% — the biggest monthly gain since January 2023 and well above expectations. Auto sales surged 5.3%, as buyers rushed to beat Trump’s new tariffs, helping push overall sales higher despite recession fears. Spending also increased across categories like restaurants, sporting goods, and home improvement, showing strong demand even as consumer sentiment remains low. The data contrasts with recent gloomy surveys, suggesting Americans are buying now to avoid future price hikes. Markets were mostly flat after the release, while Treasury yields ticked higher.

United Airlines kept its full-year profit forecast but issued a second estimate in case of a recession, calling the economy “impossible to predict.” The airline still expects $11.50 to $13.50 per share in adjusted earnings, but in a downturn, that could fall to $7 to $9 per share. To adjust for soft domestic demand, United will cut U.S. flight capacity by 4% starting in Q3. International and premium bookings remain strong, with premium up 17% year-over-year. CEO Scott Kirby said domestic and Canadian markets are the weakest, as Trump’s trade war and layoffs weigh on consumer confidence.

TIP
Market Downturns

Market downturns feel uncomfortable, but they often present the best opportunities to build long-term wealth. When prices fall, strong companies can trade at a discount, giving you the chance to buy quality assets for less.

It’s not about trying to time the exact bottom. It’s about recognizing that fear-driven selloffs often push prices below what a business is really worth. If you stay focused on fundamentals and invest with a long-term mindset, downturns can actually accelerate your returns once the market recovers. Some of the best investors made their biggest gains by staying calm and buying when others were selling.

TERM
Treasury Stock

Treasury stock refers to a company’s own shares that it has repurchased and holds instead of retiring. These shares are no longer counted in the total shares outstanding, which can boost earnings per share (EPS).

For example, if a company has 100 million shares and buys back 10 million, only 90 million are considered outstanding. That can make EPS look stronger—even if net income stays the same. Investors track treasury stock to understand how buybacks are affecting valuation metrics and ownership structure. It’s also a sign that the company believes its stock is undervalued or has excess cash to return to shareholders.
