Welcome to Sunday’s Bean Breakdown. We have lots to talk about today!

Here’s What You Missed Last Week:

HEADLINES
What You Need To Know

OpenAI has introduced a new way to access ChatGPT: by calling 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) in the U.S. or messaging the same number via WhatsApp. This initiative aims to make ChatGPT more accessible through familiar communication channels. Callers receive 15 minutes of free interaction per month, while WhatsApp users have a daily message limit. This service is part of OpenAI's efforts to broaden AI accessibility and user engagement.

Thousands of Amazon workers across seven U.S. facilities have initiated a strike, demanding improved wages, benefits, and safer working conditions. Organized by the Teamsters union, this action aims to pressure Amazon into negotiations during the peak holiday shopping season. The union had set a deadline for Amazon to agree to bargaining dates, which the company did not meet. In response, Amazon has downplayed the strike's impact, asserting that the participants are primarily outsiders and that its operations will continue as usual.

The Federal Reserve has reduced its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a target range of 4.25% to 4.5%, marking the third consecutive cut this year. This decision aims to balance economic growth with inflation control. Despite these cuts, the Fed projects a slower pace of rate reductions in 2025, indicating a cautious approach to future monetary policy.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Jan. 10 over whether a law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app violates the First Amendment. The law, set to take effect on Jan. 19, would otherwise force Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their platforms, citing national security concerns about its Chinese ownership. TikTok, which serves 170 million U.S. users, argues the law is unconstitutional and warns of significant harm to creators and small businesses.

UPCOMING
What You Need To Watch

On Monday, the Nasdaq 100 will officially rebalance, welcoming Palantir and MicroStrategy to the index. For investors, index rebalances can lead to short-term volatility as funds adjust their holdings

On Tuesday, the New Home Sales report will provide insight into the state of the U.S. housing market. This report tracks the number of newly constructed homes sold, offering a gauge of demand and economic health.

On Tuesday, the stock market will close early at 1:00 PM ET in observance of Christmas Eve. The stock market will be closed on Wednesday in observance of Christmas Day.

On Thursday, the weekly Initial Jobless Claims report will be released, offering a look at how many people filed for unemployment benefits for the first time. This data is a key indicator of the labor market’s health.

TIP
Tax-advantaged Accounts

Tax-advantaged accounts like IRAs and 401(k)s are powerful tools for growing your investments. They let you defer or even avoid taxes, meaning more of your money stays invested and compounds over time.

For example, let’s say you contribute $6,500 annually to a Roth IRA starting at age 30. Assuming a 7% annual return, your account could grow to over $1 million by retirement with no taxes owed on withdrawals. Compare that to a taxable account, where gains and dividends are taxed yearly, eating into your growth. Always prioritize these accounts to maximize your long-term returns

TERM
P/B Ratio

The Price-to-Book (P/B) ratio compares a company's market value to its book value (assets minus liabilities). It’s calculated by dividing the stock price by the book value per share. For example, if a stock is trading at $30 and its book value per share is $15, the P/B ratio is 2. A P/B ratio below 1 could indicate the stock is undervalued, meaning the company’s assets might be worth more than its market price. This metric is particularly helpful for asset-heavy industries, like banking or manufacturing, where book value plays a significant role in valuation.
